Over a half a century ago Giovanni Giotta brought his family to America and found a new world where
hard work and prudent decisions still spelled success. Settling in San Francisco Mr. Giotta, already
known to everyone as "Papa Gianni", decided to bring the Italian coffee and charm he remembered
from the coffee houses in Trieste to his new home, and opened Caffe Trieste in the North Beach
neighborhood.
Caffe Trieste soon became famous for its authentic espresso, the first to be served on the West
Coast, as well as the opera-singing Giotta family, and attracted writers, poets, tourists and local
residents alike. All five decades of Caffe Trieste history are documented in large black and white
photographs on the walls; pictures that show Papa Gianni with a young, shaggy-haired Francis Ford
Coppola, who spent six months in the café writing his screenplay for “The Godfather”, Luciano
Pavarotti, Bill Cosby and Lawrence Ferlinghetti, who is still a regular customer.
Now Papa Gianni has brought Caffe Trieste to the South Bay, opening his new café in the historic
Sainte Claire building in the heart of the SoFA district. While outstanding coffee drinks and Italian
pastries are a given, people are already heading to Caffe Trieste San Jose for its grilled panini,
soups, sandwiches and salads, as well as its selection of affordable Italian wines and European
beers. Ideally situated next to the California Theatre and only a block away from San Jose Convention
Center, The Tech Museum and all major hotels, visitors and the after work crowd can enjoy a glass of
wine in the evenings before heading out to Opera San José or the movies.
Quickly becoming established as a live music venue, Caffe Trieste San Jose also has the amazing
privilege to host artists from Opera San José on the First Friday of every month, in conjunction with the
South FIRST FRIDAYS Art Walk, performing your favorite arias live in the café. A unique San Jose
experience not to be missed! As Papa Gianni celebrates his famous café’s 50 years in San
Francisco, the history of Caffe Trieste in San Jose is just beginning.
